Winds of music
My weekend last evening was interesting as i had the pleasure of meeting Jazzy Joe, India's leading saxophonist. My very first meeting with him was a revelation and something to cheer about simply because there was so much optimism in his step and so much of youth in that frame of 77 years. Who says that Goan musicians don't give their mite to the industry? We have so many stalwarts who contineously support the live cause all the time. Their dedication to the industry that they care for so much, borders on the sublime. And most musicians are that way! If they falter at times, it is because even bread and butter can be a problem for them. Live music in Goa has to be propelled with Konkani and it is Konkani that will bring about a complete revival, more recognization and money for the cash strapped musician! In my association with Jazz Goa, I have had the opportunity of seeing dedication of musicians at the closest quarters. And with the foundation well laid, the next step in our quest for quality live music is Konkani jazz. After all what is jazz? It is a genre of music that allows you to express yourself in different ways at different times. So isn't expression of love for your own language is much more well founded via music?
Konkani stalwart, Tomazinho Cardozo feels that Konkani jazz is in interesting way to take even more creativity to grassroots. Subtle changes in popular songs will bring about a refreshing change of improvising with the music which is the foundation of jazz constantly egging the musician, music lovers will be treated to various renditions that will bring out the soul of music that much more.
So what are we waiting for? Let us all demand good Konkani music whether it is in restaurants, in pubs, in discotheques, at house partys, wherever. And lets us be pleasantly surprised what that does to us. As a start we at Jazz Goa are having a small session for Konkani Jazz in our next show on the 31st of this month. With so much enthusiasm for this amongst musicians, we thought it fit to bring it back into the mainstream and to actually feel what Jazzy Joe and others have to offer. I can assure you that it is something that will tickle your senses. Chris Perry would be so proud.
Jazz Goa calls all musicians and music lovers to join in the show on the 31st of July which will also commemorate the launching of the website
