‘Heritage Jazz’, played host to Acuri, World famous Brazilian instrumental maestros. They performed live at the Gonsalves Mansion on August 15 th 2009, in aid of Brasil Futebol Academia (BFA).
Heritage Jazz was conceptualized and initiated by Mr. Armando Gonsalves. It is located in Campal, the heritage area to the west of Panjim. It started four years ago with a number of fun verandah shows which turned into more serious jazz events.
Brasil Futebol Academia teaches football to the youth, and has as an objective of teaching the basic principles of football to all athletes lying in the age group from 8 years to 16 years. It also helps them in the process of integration as citizens and transforming them into professionals in the field of sports. Besides looking after the formation of future athletes, the BFA also provides the students learning at BFA, a more dignified and healthy life.
Acuri, the band of five, Pedro Carneiro on Keyboards and Melodica, Cacá Guifer on Flute, Saxophone and Percussion, Roberto Kauffmann on Drums, Percussion and Cavaquinho, Davi Mello on Guitar and Cavaquinho and Ricardo Sá Reston on Bass, Percussion, Compositions and Arrangements. The band played along with Goa’s very own William D’Souza a Carnatic Percussionist.
This event was a sporting mix of football and jazz, which attracted people from different walks of life. The ambiance created at The Mansion reflected the Goan elements of home, music, heritage and football.
The Gonsalves Mansion has become synonymous as the birth place of Jazz in Goa and Jazz concerts. Heritage Jazz is thus playing its part in conserving the music and songs of decades gone by.
The host, Heritage Jazz has taken upon itself the task toward the betterment of society. The vision to protect and to nurture two old and graceful legacies of time itself – the living heritage of Goa and Jazz gave rise to a unique sensory art form called Heritage Jazz. It has contributed in many ways. One of its aims is taking music to the masses, particularly children. It has in its past conducted many workshops tied up with schools such as Sharada Mandir and the Sunshine School.
On August 17, 2009 Heritage Jazz organized a workshop with Christ the King School, Margao. The band played for the children and had an interactive session with them. They spoke about their music and the instruments they played. The workshop was wildly successful creating a spark in hearts and minds of the youngsters present.
This year, Heritage Jazz has a line of events that commenced with this event on the 15 th of August, and will have musicians from across the world. Events that will be part of the celebrations this year will be the Fusion for Peace sequel to last year’s event and Jazz for Peace amongst others. Above all, as usual, Heritage Jazz is about getting people together through music.
