Musical Enrichment Through Competition

On Sunday, February 27, Goa made musical history. Five finalists out of the original eleven participants enthralled the large audience at the Kala Academy Concert Hall with outstanding violin artistry. The First David Menezes InternationalViolin was a magnificent success. Goa has been blessed with the convergence of vital musical forces that made this event possible.

The judges brought their expertise as teachers, lecturers, educators, mentors, performers and music lovers. The panel members came from richly diverse backgrounds encouraging our youngsters to give of their best to meet international standards. The judges were hard pressed to arrive at their decision because the standard was high and the competitive edge was very fine indeed. They were totally impressed by the musical fervour of our youngsters and our teachers.

The judges have promised to return because they’ve fallen in love with Goa, Goan musicians, Goan people and food, the whole Goan ambience. Such opportunities are rare. We should reach out for them with eagerness.

The banner of Guitar Guild Goa proudly shone as a backdrop throughout the evening symbolizing the dedicated commitment of its members to this competition. The simple effective logo created by Goa’s top artist, Querozito captures the Guild’s passionate musical sunrise, its initiative in fostering new beginnings and its triple strength. All these qualities where in ample evidence in the organisation of the event.

The large audience provided the necessary support. They were rewarded with high level performances motivated into excellence in the keenly competitive atmosphere of the evening. The artists took centre stage with confident aplomb. This assertive assured spirit emerged triumphantly. Sanya Cotta cut an angelic figure in her white dress and easily claimed first prize with her flawless performance of Bach’s Chaconne. Avrelle DeSousa exuded professionalism and total command to achieve second prize and Ashley Rego demonstrated violin mastery in his precision and obtained the third prize.

Mr. Pratapsingh Rane, Chairman of Kala Academy, made time in his hectic political schedule to be present for most of the performances and to express his exuberance over the high standard demonstrated.

Dean Menezes and Cecilia Menezes, son and wife respectively, of David Menezes, a lover of all music and promoter of opportunities for Goans to experience great music, donated the prizes in memory of David. Their presence, their words of encouragement, and their pledge to offer continuing help to musical growth in Goa should be a trumpet call to other business organisations and individuals to follow suit, to put their shoulders to the wheel and support the burgeoning young talent in Goa.

Goa is a place of music; has always been a place of music. And if it’s to continue, the involvement of everyone who can support our youngsters is necessary. The spark that is the hearts of many musicians in Goa has become a flame, thanks to the cooperation, encouragement, dedication, commitment of so many people particularly Guitar Guild Goa and the David Menezes family. This flame has to become a fire.
